In winter, the air gets colder, and colder air means less humidity. Colder air doesn’t have as much capacity to hold moisture as warm air does. Because there’s less moisture in the outside air, there’s less moisture in even the warmer indoor air; that’s why your hands, lips, etc. get drier in the winter. The goal of a humidifier is to manually add moisture to the indoor air that the outdoor air is not supplying.
