Do you have a question about gardening? We might have an answer. Check out the 13 Q&As below to find out everything you’ve been waiting to know about gardening!

  1. How do I plan a good garden?
    • Go on garden tours! Study up on what you like and what you don’t. Framing your garden with fences or hedges can be an important way to add order and allow the rest to overgrow.
  2. Can I have just one of each plant?
    • Probably not – groupings are best to making your garden cohesive!
  3. How do I design the patio so it gets used?
    • Make sure it has a sense of enclosure! That way, it feels more part of the house and has a sense of comfort.
  4. Which tree should I plant?
    • This depends on your location and yard, but a small tree might work best. That way, you can watch it grow up! Some examples are semidwarf fruit trees and the redbud and golden chain tree.
  5. How often should I water?
    • When your garden needs it. To check this, stick your finger in the soil. If it’s dry, water it! Planning your garden to make the most of the rain will help this.
  6. How often should I fertilize?
    • Depends on how much growth you want. Every 5-7 days can produce miraculous growth, but every 10 days can give you more moderate results.
  7. Why do my plants keep dying?
    • It might be an indication that location isn’t right for the plant. Try it in a different location or try a different plant.
  8. How large should my lawn be?
    • The less the better as far as the garden is concerned! Lawn is boring compared to other plants, so just use it for pathways.
  9. How should I edge my lawn?
    • Use the British method of an 8-inch-deep trench, made by a hoe.
  10. What annuals should I plant in my garden?
    • Low-maintenance annuals like larkspur, California poppies, and bachelor buttons work best in beds, while high-maintenance impatiens, begonias, and pansies work best in pots.
  11. Does spring or fall work best for cutting back perennials?
    • Leaving the crown on for the winter protects the plant, so cut them back in late-winter/early-spring.
  12. How can I best mulch my garden?
    • You could mulch, but you may also be able to put your plants closer together than recommended to provide more shade that is more beautiful.
  13. Which plants can I put in pots?
    • Anything! Just move them inside when it gets cold.
