Pretty soon (hopefully) the sun will come out, the birds will start to sing and you’ll be ready to get to work on some spring cleaning. If you’re ready to clean out your closet and finally toss out that dress that hasn’t fit since High School, here are some tips to help you do the job.
Choose your time wisely. Some tend to start big projects in the evening whether because they’re working or because that’s when they get their burst of energy. Either way, this doesn’t usually work out well, unless you can stay up all night and sleep in the next day. Start in the morning and pick a day where you have plenty of time to finish the project.
After you’ve gone through you closet and pulled out those pieces that need to go, identify which items you actually wear. Hang all your clothes with the hanger hook pointing towards you, if you wear that piece of clothing, when you hang it back up, face the hook towards the back of the closet. If, after several months, you still have any hangers pointing towards you, chances are you don’t wear it and can find it a new home.
If you live in a place that changes seasons, find a way to store your seasonal clothes. Sweatshirts, sweaters and jackets take up a lot of space. Which ever season you’re not wearing at the moment store these clothes in airtight bins or garment bags.
We all have those pants and shirts we love but have holes in them. Make it a priority to sit down and patch them up. Either take them in to be repaired or grab a needle and thread and to it yourself. If you’re patching up jeans find a piece of fabric that you love and put that in the hole window. Lace is trendy right now and can add charm to any pair of jeans. If it’s just a little hole in a shirt or pants a few stitches is all it takes to make it wearable again.
Clean out your shoe collection. It’s hard to, but unless it’s your passion and you wear different pairs often, clean out those pairs of shoes that are taking up valuable closet space. Take out all of shoes, if you find any that you’ve forgotten about it’s probably time to donate. This goes for purses, belts, and other misc. items as well.
