Hardwood floors are expensive, so when you invest in them, it’s important to care for them in appropriate ways. To help you clean your hardwood in a way that won’t damage them, we’re going over some basic tips for cleaning them.
The way to determine how you should clean your hardwood floors is not by the wood, but by the finish. Surface finishes (also known as urethanes or polyurethanes) are the most popular treatments to hardwood today. There are 4 types of surface finishes: water based, oil based, acid cured and moisture cured. Early treatments of hardwood may have been with varnish, wax, or shellac, which requires a different method of cleaning.
For surface finished floors, clean by first vacuuming, sweeping or dust-mopping the surface. Then damp mop (make sure it’s not too wet) with a pH-neutral soap like dishwashing soap and water.
For unfinished or wax floors, clean by sweeping and vacuuming. Do not damp mop as this may harm your floor.
