The Dos and Don'ts for Acne and Blemish Treatments

Don’t wash your face too much.  Dirty skin doesn’t lead to acne or blemishes.  Frequent face washing can irritate skin as well as grainy or chemical ridden soaps.  Using these methods or products can make skin and acne worse.  Instead wash acne and blemish-prone areas twice a day with mild cleansers and warm water.

Do choose oil free soaps.  Oil free soaps don’t clog your pores.  They also don’t cause blackheads or other skin blemishes.  When choosing a soap choose one labeled nonacnegenic, noncomedogenic or oil free.  Apply the soap and wish with fingertips.  Using other products can be too abrasive and can irritate the skin.

Don’t avoid your favorite foods.  It’s a myth that certain foods cause acne.  Some foods may trigger a hormonal reaction which can lead to an overgrowth of skin cells or too much oil production, but unless you notice that certain foods cause you to break out, you don’t need to avoid specific types.

Drink plenty of water.  Drinking water will keep your skin well hydrated.  Incorporating healthy foods into your diet such as leafy greens, fresh fruits and other vegetables increase your intake of vitamin A and E which are known to benefit your skin.

Don’t use heavy cosmetics.  Creamy foundations or blush can cause clogged pores.  Mineral-based cosmetics are lighter weight and may be less likely to do so.  If you need to wear makeup choose an oil free foundation.  Before applying makeup try splashing your face with cold water to close your pores and before to wash your make up off before bed.

Don’t sunbathe or tan.  It puts your skin at risk for cancer and premature aging which leads to wrinkles.  Also, if you’ve been prescribed any acne medications that can make your skin more sensitive and more susceptible damage from the UV rays.

To keep your skin healthy in the sun use an oil free sunscreen or moisturizer.  Use SPF 15 or higher which provides a broad spectrum protection from UVB and UVA rays and reapply every two hours.

Don’t use greasy hair products.  Pomades or gels can clog your pores when your hair brushes against your face.  Keep your hair clean using oil free shampoo.  Shampoo daily if you have oily hair and shield your face when applying any sprays or gels to your hair.

Pulling long hair back can keep it from aggravating your skin.  Your hair produces natural oils so if you’re prone to breakouts try to keep your hair off your face and pulled back as much as possible even if you don’t use hair products.

Keep things off your face.  Touching or rubbing your face with your hands or cell phone can irritate blemishes because they carry oils and germs.  Sweat can also make acne worse so wash your face gently after sweating.

Apply make up with applicators.  If you use your hands, use only your fingertips.  Only apply make-up to clean skin.

A good moisturizer can help calm irritated skin and keep acne at bay so apply an oil free moisturizer to the skin.

Don’t pop your pimples.  This causes irritation, inflammation and scaring.

Use Acne medications as directed.  Using too much or too little will cause issues.  Acne takes up to six months to clear out so don’t use more than recommended to speed up the process…it wont and can cause the skin irritation.

Look into all your options for acne and blemish treatment.  Talk to you doctor.
