DIY Replace Your Toilet & Save Money (Step-by-Step Instructions)

November 10, 2018 By tub_admin Leave a Comment

If you have ever been faced with a task that seems less than pleasant, the more you understand about how to get the project done, the better off you are. When it comes to your home there are a few such tasks that come to mind that might fit this category. No one likes to take out the garbage or clean the garage. No one likes to clean the bathroom and few enjoy doing the laundry (at least in our home). One technical task that most really would rather avoid is to install a toilet.

Houzz.com gives a very detailed photo gallery of step-by-step instructions for doing just such a thing, but if you do not have time to view the article in full, here are the steps they suggest you take to get the job done right. Of course, if you have an existing toilet, you will need to remove that one first.

Plus, you will need to be sure you have all of the following tools/materials on hand before starting the project:

Here’s What You Need

  • New toilet with tank and seat
  • Screwdrivers – Phillips and Flathead
  • Crescent Wrench (or a ratchet set)
  • Pliers (Channel Locks are good)
  • Wax Ring with bolts for toilet seal
  • Caulking-White water-proof
  • Flexible water hose-ask your hardware store for the right sizes

Order of Steps

Once you have everything in place and have successfully removed the old stool and cleaned the area up, follow these steps:
  1. Install wax ring as well as the bolts
  2. Put the bowl on the ring and press it into place
  3. Anchor the toilet to the floor with the bolts and washers
  4. Tighten bolts and then install the plastic bolt covers
  5. Level the toilet using shims or spare coins
  6. Install the toilet tank (some tanks come already attached so you may be able to skip this step
  7. Connect water supply to the toilet with a flexible hose
  8. Install Toilet Seat. Some newer seats are much easier to install than the old ones used to be.
  9. Caulk around the base of the toilet to seal out moisture.
  10. Turn on the water and check (and fix) any leaks

Putting a new toilet in a bathroom or powder room yourself saves plumber fees, and it’s less scary than you might expect.
