This is great I have always liked these kinds of signs, I have one in my laundry room actually and I think I could make these for my family members for Christmas if I hurry. Thanks for the idea and it will be much cheaper than buying something for everyone. I appreciate the effort you put into this and I look forward to your next post.
As a graphic artist, I really appreciate this lesson on how to organically create a vintage, withered sign. I am very good at creating all sorts of looks, including vintage and aged materials, but that is digitally for print or the internet. Before I found this site, I would have found myself a piece of wood or plastic and created vinyl graphics to wrap around it – like they do for ads on a city bus.
This article reminds me of how impressive it is to see the work of a professional restorer after he / she has completed refurbishing some vintage item. I have seen some amazing transformations done to old junk items like classic gas pumps, bycicles, and just about anything else you can think of. They really know how to recreate vintage art work like logos and other designs from the past.
I want to make an electronic vintage sign – one that resembles a Vegas sign with the flashing light bulbs all around it. I do not think I can make that from scratch unless I cut a piece of wood or plastic and then design the surface and letters on a computer and then have it printed out in vinyl graphics wrapping. I can then wrap it around the sign and add light bulbs later.
