It’s easy to get overwhelmed by your belongings. If you’ve lived in the same home for a while, chances are that you’ve accumulated some things you don’t need. Having to much stuff can cause you to feel uncomfortable and claustrophobic in your home. There comes a time when you have to get rid of some stuff but how do you figure out what to keep and what to toss when it comes time to de-clutter your home? In this article they go over several questions that you need to ask yourself when going through your “stuff”.
- Has this been used in the last year?
- Is it broken, and if so, is it work fixing? Will I fix it?
- Do I have a use for this in the near future?
- Would it be expensive to get another one if I regret parting with it?
- Is this loved?? (You don’t want to start any family feuds!)
- Does it make life easier?
- Do I need it?
- Would I rather have this, or the space that it occupies in my home?
- Would I keep this if I were to move? Or: Would it be worth packing up, carrying around and unpacking in a new space?
- Would someone else enjoy it more than I do?
- How many other items do I have that serve the same purpose?
- Is it my style now or just something I used to like?
- Does it fit? (your style, your body, your space, your needs?)
Ultimately it’s up to you to decide whether to keep or ditch an item, but these questions can help you put it all into perspective. It’s a good idea to keep from thinking how much something cost. Just because it was expensive doesn’t mean it’s useful or relevant now. It’s also a good idea not to hold them. Put them on a counter and look at them with a critical eye. This will break your emotional attachment which can make certain items hard to part with.
