Everyone likes to dabble and give interior design a try. After all, it is a great way to add a personal touch to our homes and have control over the redesign budget. Yet, we usually don’t pause to think about the actual definition of design style. For American homes, we can identify a dozen styles that were dominant in the last couple of centuries. Perhaps no other style is more American than colonial home style, followed by Georgian and Federal. Further, into the 19th century, we are seeing a rise of Greek Revival homes.
Key Takeaways:
- Colonial kitchens were the heart of the home and still are with updated, modern colonial-inspired designs.
- Be sure to include earthenware accents such as urns, vases and oversized stone planters, and Spanish, Italian or French antiques to ensure a timeless feel in an Old World setting.
- The asymmetrical shapes of Victorian architecture can be found in cities all over the U.S., while distinctive Victorian color schemes and gingerbread trim gave homes unmistakable character and charm.
“Symmetry, balance, and classic styling creates rooms with a formal, orderly appearance.”
