Now that the cold has broken and you can move from your warm spot by the fireplace, doubts may be creeping into your mind: do we really want a brick fireplace? In case you’re thinking of making the transition from brick to tile on your fireplace, we have some guidance on how to go about it right.
First, cover the hearth. Remove the mantel and whatever else is connected to the brick. Dislodge loose sediment and mortar and clean it with white vinegar. Give it a day or two to dry. Next, spread a thin cement over the brick with a trowel and into the grout joints. Make sure it’s flat with the thin set. Let it dry overnight. Then, put on another layer of the thin cement and put your tiles on it.
That’s not too bad, huh? Just make sure the tiles are put on straight, especially above the firebox. You can click here for more specific instructions.
