Cast iron bathtubs are made to last for a very long time. It is a good idea to take great care of them since they will be a permanent fixture in the home. Abrasive cleaners can scratch or dull the porcelain finish on the tub surface. Using non-abrasive cleaners is the best policy. There is no need to purchase a cleaning product as you have items used every day in the home that can be used.
For cleaning using natural products:
Items that can be used:
- liquid dishwashing soap
- ammonia
- lemon oil
- table salt
- lemon
- soft rag
- nylon / soft sponge
- bucket
Weekly Cleaning:
- Mix 2 tbs of dishwashing soap with 1 gallon of hot water, wet soft rag or sponge by dipping into the bucket, wash the tub well, and rinse with fresh water.
Monthly Cleaning:
- Add 1/4 cup each of the baking soda & ammonia to a bucket of warm water, washtub with a soft rag, and rinse well with clean water. If there is an area with difficult to clean spots, continue to rinse and wipe the spot until clean. (NOTE: Never add bleach to ammonia!)
- If the baking soda has left a visible white film on the tub, or if you just want the tub to really shine, squeeze the juice of 1/2 lemon into a bowl with salt in it. Scrub the white filmy area with a soft sponge and rinse.
Always flush the washed area with plenty of clean water and your tub will continue to shine and look brand new.
