Did you think that our Holiday Help series was over just because we’ve passed up December 25th? Not so! If there is anything that is just as stressful as setting up for the holidays, it’s recovering from them. If cooking up that big meal for your family has left you exhausted then cleaning probably isn’t your first priority. Unfortunately the longer you leave a mess the worse it gets, especially in the kitchen.
After heavy use, your kitchen becomes center stage for grease and grime, and cleaning it isn’t a pretty task. Grease itself is a stubborn stain that is as hard to clean of your kitchen as it is to get off your cookware. Harder actually, unless you want to take steel wool to your walls and countertops, which isn’t something we would recommend.
The good news is that you can make a simple degreaser yourself out of only vinegar and water. Helpful tip: Save a little of that vinegar before you start cooking your next meal to help clean up right away. Be cautious though, as vinegar can ruin certain surfaces, like wooden or stone countertops.
If you want to tone it down a little and save your kitchen some harsh treatment, there’s a softer recipe you can use; mixing baking soda with a cup of warm water will do the trick. You can adjust the amount of baking soda in the solution to suit to the toughness of the grease stain in question.
Alternatively, there are plenty of reliable degreasers available at your local grocery store. Just be sure to read the label to check if it’s safe to use on your kitchen’s surfaces.
After you’ve applied your cleaning solution, either homemade or store-bought, be sure to wash with clean water after the stain is gone. This will prevent any residue from hanging around, forcing you to start cleaning all over again.
