Heart Health- Healthy Living

Your whole body works together to keep you moving.  When one of them goes on the fritz you’re down for the count.  Your heart is at the center of it all, pumping the blood to your other parts with a rhythm that is music to any doctor’s ears.

Keeping your heart health is surprisingly simple.

Get Exercise.  Adults need at least 30 minutes of exercise a day five or more days a week.  Don’t get discouraged if you’re not a fan of sitting on a bike or watching TV while walking on your treadmill.  Getting out to play is exercise too and improving your health can be as simple as kicking a ball around with your kids, walking the dog or shooting hoops.  Break it up into ten minute intervals through out your day  The key to healthy cardio is getting your heart rate elevated enough that you’re a little out of breath, but can still carry on a conversation.

Get Checked.  Nobody is going to watch your health, except you.  It’s easy to forget your check-ups but getting regular blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol checks as well as your physical exams are important to maintaining your health. Knowledge is power and anything you can find out about what’s going on inside your body, the better.  This is especially true when you’re checking on “silent” ailments such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol.

Weight Maintenance.  Maintaining a healthy weight not only reduces your risk for serious heart conditions but it can also improve your daily living by boosting energy, self-esteem and sleep.  The easiest way to do this is making healthy eating choices.  Need tips? Sooth Stress.  Carve out time in your busy schedule for yourself.  Being good to yourself is important in heart health to keep stress at bay.  Be sure to relax and “unplug” daily.  Stress is a significant villain not only to heart health but many health issues and can wreak havoc if we’re not careful.

Quit Smoking.  Linked to cancer, lung disease and higher chances of heart disease, the risks of smoking are well known.  Especially if you’re at risk for these issues, putting down the cigarettes is the first step in living a heart healthy lifestyle.  Reach out, get help and support.  Your heart is depending on it!

All of these steps can be simple, but doing it with a friend always makes any life changing decision easier.  Grab a buddy and start living healthy, together!
