Are your kids sitting inside watching TV or playing video games? Does it drive you crazy to never see them run around in the yard? Designing your garden to be a place that the kids will love to play in can be part of the solution to this problem.
What kinds of things make a garden kid-friendly? Gardens that are rich in scents, textures, and colors are ideal for children, who learn about the world best when their senses are stimulated as well as their minds. Some plants that accomplish this are sunflowers, flowering vines, and snapdragons.
You can also draw your kids’ interests by luring local wildlife to the garden. Bird feeders and other human inventions can be effective for this, as well as the types of plants you grow. A kid is much more likely to watch a butterfly than a snow pea, after all.
