The Christmas season brings out the decorating diva in men and women alike. Men are busily stringing lights on the house, garage, shed and trees, while women are decking the halls with boughs of holly, garland, glittery balls and scented candles.
Christmas is the celebration of Jesus’ birthday and such a day deserves an abundance of decorations! The entry to the home is a good place to start the festive decoration so passers-by get a look at your handy-work. Green garland can be placed around the door post and red ribbon bows in each corner, place a green wreath with a big red bow in the center of the door and you have just created a traditional looking Christmas entry to your home.
Once inside the house there are tons of decorating ideas from simple and inexpensive to elaborate and costly. Placing scented candles throughout the rooms of a home in pine or apple, pumpkin or cinnamon helps to set a homey holiday feel. Adding lots of the traditional red and green colors creates a sense of Christmas celebrations of old. However, today, there is no end to the beautiful bulbs, baubles and garland that is used to adorn table tops, door ways and Christmas trees.

About the only thing I like about Christmas decorations are scented candles and perhaps a mistletoe (whenever there is a good looking friend in the vicinity). Other than that, I don’t care for all the traditional light shows, though they look pretty. I also do like the smell of fresh pine tree. I just don’t take part in the ancient celebration of Saturnalia.
When the holidays roll around, there are more than enough opportunities and reasons for the arts and crafts enthusiast to get busy and with a purpose. After all, if you plan on inviting family to your home, there are so many things and places that present an opportunity to flex your creative abilities. There may be a fire place, the dining table, the front door (missile toe) and so on.
As a graphic artist, I often see amateur designers go crazy with trying to show off their creativity at every turn to the point that every aspect of the canvas (whether it’s a print ad or a web page) competes with the other. In other words, the designs clash. Remember to stay with one theme and style for your holiday decorating. It makes shopping for decor easier and makes your space feel professionally finished.
