The Fourth of July will be here before you know it and there’s no doubt that you have something planned to celebrate America’s independence! Here are some tips to help you bring the party out back while you’re watching the grill.
TWISTER!
Using a cardboard template, spray paint circles onto the grass. You can personalize it by using different colors (like red white and blue!) , or scaling down the size of the dots to accommodate the wee ones.
JANGA
With a little bit of lumber and sanding you can take this classic family game to the next level. Over-sized blocks with bring out the over-sized fun, but remember those are some big blocks, be sure to move out of the way when they fall!
BOWLING
Everyone loves a good game of bowling, but spending an afternoon in a dark musty building wearing community shoes doesn’t exactly sound like the way to spend a great summer holiday. Instead, start saving those 2LT bottles you have lying around and when the party begins, fill them up with some water and add food coloring. Then get ready to have a ball stacking up those strikes.
TETHERBALL
By the time I came around the playground, the poles were still there, but all the ropes and balls had been taken down years ago. Now, you can’t find any evidence of Tetherball no matter how hard you look, so why not bring back this classic in your own back yard? Either purchase a kit or make your own. It’s easy to set up either by anchoring a pole into the ground, or concreting it into an old tire, hook up the rope and volley ball and get to playing!
Cornhole
Cornhole, known in some states as Baggo, is a game with an unknown history but a vocal following, especially in the South and Midwest. Players attempt to toss beanbags—usually filled with corn kernels—in a hole on the opposite platform. A cornhole game is a super simple DIY project and a fun activity after a cookout.
RINGTOSS
There are several sets you can purchase online, but if you’re an avid DIY-er you can easily make your own. With some glass bottles (which you can paint) a wooden crate and some embroidery hoops covered in string or ribbon, you can have hours of fun with this classic carnival game.
