You may have found yourself in a decorating rut and it may be time to challenge some of your safe decorating choices. Are you happy with your space? Does it reflect your personality? Does it make you feel inspired and uplifted? If you said no to any of these questions it may be time to refresh your space. What suited you a decade ago, may not be what you need now.
Change is hard, and there’s no way around it, so start small and work your way up. Take the style you gravitate towards and give it a fresh twist.
Wake up your space with a bright lamp. Pillows or throws are a popular way to add color but can be thrown aside when you feel self-conscious about your color choice. If you’ve been stuck in neutral too long, hit the gas and ease into the world of color. It adds impact but is stationary without being permanent.
There is always the financial aspect of braking the bank for something we end up regretting. If you’re worried about making the wrong choice, try giving something you already own a make over. Try adding a fun new lighting fixture that will add personality to your space without causing your wallet to panic.
Start small with an interesting piece of art. Instead of moving out the furniture and throwing your whole home into upheaval, grab something colorful and fresh for your wall.
If you’ve got your eye on a new trend, but aren’t sure how you’ll feel about it in your home, try it out on something small such as a stool or a side table. You won’t have to worry that it’ll dominate the room but can take it for a test drive.
Changing the shape of your furniture can take that invisible piece of furniture and spice things up. If you’re using a rectangle coffee table try swapping it out for two small round ones. If you’ve got a round kitchen table, find a square. If you’re unable to buy anything new, try moving things from room to room to create a fresh look.
If you’re home is decorated in a classy style, and you’re ready to give it an update, try sneaking in some acrylic or Lucite. It’s a distinctly modern plastic that fits in with any style. It’s clear so it’s not over bearing and won’t throw your whole space off balance.
Play with your staircase. Adding some new paint to the banister or papering the wall can give you a whole new look without changing the whole house.
Start working with a color that makes you feel a particular way. Take the time and figure out which colors trigger which emotions. If you’re missing the turquoise waters from your last cruise try grabbing the color and adding it into the room for a dose of happy hue. If you need to feel chipper in the kitchen figure out which color gets your energy up and sprinkle it throughout the room.
Adding a word print canvas can give your space a current vibe while personalizing your home. You can find something in your local home department section or grab a canvas, paints and stencils and make your own.
If you want to make a splash try a tablescape. Start with a rectangular tray that will fit on your table or ottoman, add a small stack of books, a decorative box or other small object on top of the stack. Place a pretty bowl along side and finish with an arrangement of flowers.
