Whether you’re unsure of what you want to be, or you just have to wait to put your costume together until last minute, here are some great Halloween masks that you can put together in no time which can turn any outfit into a full blown costume. There are tutorials for masks for adults and for kids so you can make something for your whole family.
Grumpy Cat
What you Need
- Printable mask template (download here)
- Parchment paper
- Pen
- Sharpie marker
- Fabric puff paint
- Ribbon
- Scissors
- Paper
- Tape
- Tulle
- Cut out the mask from the downloadable template or make your own. Decorate it
- Tape your mask down. Then tape a piece of parchment paper on top of your mask. Next tape a piece of tulle on top of the parchment paper. Make sure everything is secure. You should be able to see your design through the parchment paper and tulle.
- Use your fabric paint to carefully trace your mask design onto the tulle. Remember to add loops to both sides of your mask so you can easily string ribbons through. Let your paint dry.
- Once your paint dries, you can easily peel your mask off the parchment paper. Cut out your mask and string two strands of ribbon through each loop.
Masquerade Mask
- Fabric Scraps
- Craft store masks
- Embellishments (ribbon, jewels, glitter, feathers)
- Mod Podge for Fabric
- Glue
- Scissors
- Paintbrush
- Cut fabric about an inch larger than mask all the way around. Snip the knot off one end of the elastic and pull the elastic out of the mask by the other hole. Set the elastic aside for later.
- Apply a layer of Mod Podge on fabric. This worked well on the plastic mask. On the mask that was more paper in content, I used regular craft glue for this step.
- Press fabric to mask, making sure to press down and smooth wrinkles where mask bends. Wrap and secure edges around the mask, trimming any excess fabric as you go.
- Note: If you do the cat’s eye mask, you need to take a snip at the point between the eyes so you can fold the fabric the appropriate direction.
- Next, snip a hole in the center of each eye, and cut radially to the edge of the eye opening.
- Push cut fabric from eye hole through and secure to the back of the mask with more glue or Mod Podge. Poke holes through the mini-grommets for the elastic band. I used my seam-ripper for this task, because the point seemed the right size. You could use a darning needle, too.
- Apply two more coats of Mod Podge, waiting for each coat to dry in between. Don’t forget to re-poke the holes for the elastic each time.
- Decorate the mask to your heart’s delight. I let the kids each do one – they chose feathers, bows, and jewels. We used glue to secure the decorations.
- Now re-feed the elastic band through the mask and tie a knot. I used my seam ripper to poke the elastic through.

Chalk Board Paint Mask
- Recycled cardboard
- Twine. If you can, use hemp twine.
- Chalkboard paint
- A hole punch
- A pencil
- Chalk
- Scissors
1. Draw a mask onto your recycled cardboard. I simply searched for a mask image on a search engine. Once I found one that I liked, I put recycled paper up to my computer, and traced it from there.
2. Cut it out.
3. Chalkboard paint it!
4. Follow the directions on the chalkboard paint for the dry and cure times. The paint that I used suggested that the paint cured for 24 hours before writing on it.
5. Punch holes in each side of the mask.
- Add ears to your mask, and then draw on whiskers with chalk to create a cute cat mask
- Draw huge eye lashes on the mask for a fun, girly look
- For an eco-friendly Halloween party, write each of your guests’ names on a mask– the masks can double as place settings and a gift
- Make a superhero mask by cutting the mask a little differently (a more edgy design), then decorate it with colored chalk
Egg Carton Mask
All you need is an egg carton, scissors, some paint or markers (we used fluro water colour blocks given to us by Micador), some string and tape or stapes.
The cutting of the masks is a little bit fiddly and needs to be done by an adult with a sharp pair of scissors.
To begin with, cut off a section of egg carton that contains two egg complete holes, and two half egg holes so that you get a complete spike between the two sets of holes.
Then trim the edges of the section of egg carton until you have two complete egg holes and the spike. Now you can see the mask taking shape with two eyes and a nose!
Next comes the really fiddly part – make a hole and carefully cut out the centre of each egg hole to make eye holes.
You can be as creative as you like cutting eye-brow and ear shapes into the sides of the pieces of egg cartons.
Decorate
Punch holes in the sides and string ribbon through to tie.
Fox Mask
Materials: felt in three colours, mask templates (available for personal use only here & here) , hot glue, child-sized sunglasses and thread(optional)
Step 1: Trace the mask template pieces onto felt and cut out.
Step 2: Once you have cut out the pieces glue the fur, nose and ear pieces onto the felt mask outline that was cut in step 1. Top stitching with a sewing machine over the glued felt pieces is optional.
Step 3: Glue the felt mask onto a pair of children’s sunglasses that have had the lenses removed.
