Design Dictionary- Caning

Used in furniture making caning can be also in fashion. Easily confused with wicker, Caning is a method of weaving using long narrow strips of peeled bark or skin of a rattan vine.  This is used typically to construct seats and chair back.  Caning originated in India and became widespread in the 19th century.

Caning applies to specifically weaving with rattan bark with a distinct open pattern while wicker is the method of weaving with any other materials such as willow or man made products.
