Cast Iron Rolled Rim Classic Clawfoot Tub

Because I am in the business of selling bathroom furniture like this beautiful classic clawfoot tub, I think a lot about how to get you interested in them as well. Telling you how unique they are and showing you some photos of their loveliness is my methodology today.

Cast Iron

These tubs are absolutely gorgeous and even though I try to post lots of images, they are never as lovely as the actual tub. This tub is made of cast iron. It is heavy, solid, cool to the touch,  It’s smooth and has rounded curves. Cast iron tubs are actually made by pouring hot, melted metal into a mold. Once the metal is cooled it hardens and maintains the shape of the mold.  This particular tub weighs about 310 pounds empty.

Faucet Holes

There are a few options for faucet locations on a classic clawfoot rolled rim tub like this one. Faucet holes are predrilled before the tub ever leaves the manufacturer as it takes quite a bit of man power and a very powerful drill to cut through cast iron! It may be for some manufacturers that the mold allows for faucet holes to be created during the molding process.

There may be three holes for the Faucet on the rim or deck of the tub or on the inside wall of the tub. The faucet holes will be on the tub above the drain hole and the overflow hole. The middle hole is for the faucet stem which has the spigot on it, while the two on either side are for the hot and cold water supply lines to attach to the faucet knobs.

If the tub has only a drain hole and an overflow hole, the tub requires a faucet that is in the bathroom wall or a freestanding style of faucet where the faucet is next to the tub and not “on” the tub.

Style Of Faucet

You can see the photo with the oil rubbed bronze faucet that the faucet is sitting on the rim or deck of the tub. That faucet is called  a Classic Telephone or British Telephone Deck Mount Faucet. Note that the spigot is out, over and into the tub and there is a hand held shower that sits in the cradle rest. This faucet pours ten gallon of water into the tub per minute. That fills the tub up pretty fast.

The other photo shows you a Gooseneck or English Telephone Faucet in polished chrome. The faucet is in holes that are on the inside wall of the tub. Again, you see the hand held shower in the same position in the cradle rest, but the gooseneck is taller than the cradle.  This faucet has a fill rate of seven gallon of water per minute.

Clawfeet

The style of the clawfeet are specific to a given tub. It is very rare that a set of randomly purchased clawfeet will fit a tub they were not made for. This Rolled Rim Classic Clawfoot Tub has Ball & Claw feet.  If you are set on having Lion’s Paw or Cannonball Feet on your tub, then you need to look for tubs that have that style of feet because each tub has specific feet designed for it. The feet are even labeled so they match up on the bottom of the tub.

Polished Brass may be available as well, so be sure to ask the staff if you really need it.
