There is just too much to say about this classic cast iron double ended clawfoot tub. I’ll start by saying it is difficult to capture the fine detailing in the molded clawfeet. It won’t matter what finish is on the feet, they are gorgeous. This style is called Imperial Ball & Claw Feet.
Two Ends?
The double ended moniker means that the tub is the same on both (double) ends of the tub. When the ends of the tub rise up in some fashion, it is a slipper tub.
You will note that the walls at the end of the tub stretch out wider than at the bottom floor the tub. A gentle slope is created with the tub wall, so when you lie back in the tub your back and neck are supported.
It may be difficult to see in the photos, but this style of cast iron double ended clawfoot tub also has a rolled rim. A rolled rim is when the cast iron mold actually curves or rolls the iron. Otherwise it would just be flat, like a shelf. Modern tubs typically have a flat edge and that is pretty standard. The makers of clawfoot tubs invest the time to make every detail noticeable and far, far above the standard of most modern tubs.
Faucet Holes
This particular cast iron double ended clawfoot tub is available without faucet holes. With no holes the tub requires a freestanding style of faucet. The tub is also available with faucet holes on the rim or deck of the tub. Naturally, if you are putting a faucet on the rim, you won’t want it rounded. That type of situation wouldn’t bode well for the stability of your faucet.
If you want this tub and it has faucet holes on the rim, then when the tub was molded, the mold will have made a flat spot on the rim of the tub.
The flat spot is just long enough to allow the faucet fixture to be installed safely and securely. The rim before and after the flat spot is a continuous rolled rim.
As you can see, there is a British Telephone style faucet on the flat spot that interrupts the rolled rim on the tub. In the photo the faucet and clawfeet are Polished Chrome. The feet and faucet are available in other finishes as well.
