You don’t have to live in a rural area to find an abundance of pine cones. Many yards have trees that produce these conifer cones, or pine cones. The pine cone is the female reproductive cone that produces the seed of the tree.
If you have these pine cones in your yard, be glad, they are beneficial in many ways.
Below you will find a list of things you can do with the pine cones you pick up in your yard, as well as some photos below.
1. Create a natural mulch around trees with pine cones, because they are a bit prickley, dogs and other animals won’t like digging in them and they provide some acidity to the ground.
2. If you enjoy watching birds, you can make simple bird feeders with pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed. Just spread the peanut butter all over the pine cone and roll it in seed. Tie a string or yarn around the top of the cone and hang from a tree or someplace you want to feed the birds.
3. A really cool idea is to liquefy some paraffin wax in a double boiler and add some crayon for color and herbs for fragrance. These pine cones can be used for fire starter in a fire place or for decorations on the hearth, table or anywhere.
4. Cinnamon scented pine cones are really popular in the fall so why buy when you can make your own? Just place a few pine cones, seeds, greenery in a bag and drop in some cinnamon sticks and cinnamon oil, seal the bag, gently shake it up and let it sit for a few days. The items in the bag will take on the aroma of the cinnamon.
5. Spray paint and glitter is an easy way to create something outdoorsy with a pine cone. For your holiday dinners, spray small pine cones silver, add some silver beads and a spring of greenery and you have just created holder for your name cards.
