A signature color is a hue that is associated with you in every sense of the word. Friends are reminded of you when they see it, your home feels more authentically “you” when it’s woven in and you love it. Sometimes it happens accidentally but you can also intentionally cultivate a signature hue.
The first step you need to take is to realize that blue isn’t blue. There are so many different shades and styles. Tiffany blue is instantly recognizable because it’s the same blue green shade every time. If you already have a favorite color, consider what the color actually is. Instead of “pink” is it magenta or bubblegum? If you love green is it pea or emerald?
Look back into your formative years. Do you have a color that resonates deeply with you? Which crayon did you search through the box to find? What color did you always paint with at school? Do you have a positive memory associated with a certain color?
If you’re still having a hard time pinpointing a color, grab a notebook or even better, a camera, and record anything that catches your eye. You may never know when you’ll see a color that calls your name. It could be in a garden, a film poster, a shop display or even your own wardrobe.
Once you’ve found that color, start figuring out how to apply it in your life. Start by creating an idea book that is entirely devoted to your color. Fill it with inspirational pictures. Rip out pages from magazines and add your snap shots from your research. Really make it your own.
Once you’ve finished your inspiration book, take it to your local hardware store and find the paint shade that matches your color. You can go big, or start out small but paint something to sample this color in your home. Enhance your color by surrounding it with colors that compliment it. Remember to write down the name of your paint color for future reference.
