Bird Houses

It’s no lie that bird watching can be fun, and the song of certain birds can be a great addition to your garden.  Bird houses are a great way to attract these little animals.  Scout out your yard for the perfect location for your bird house so that you’ll be ready for nesting season.  Soon you’ll be watching little fledglings spread their wings and take their first flights.

Whether you shop around or build your own, make sure your bird house has thick walls, enough to insulate against heat or cold, has a sloped roof to keep the rain out and has holes for ventilation and drainage.

Finding a location is important when looking for your own home, and is important to the birds too.  Grab a book from your local library or do some research online to find tips on where to site their houses.  Different birds like to nest at different heights.  Put the house in a save spot, a little distance away from feeders and bird baths.  Most birds want a concealed or camouflaged area to keep them protected against predators and other outside activities that can make nesting parents nervous.

Attaching the house to a tree may be idea for asthetic appeal but it makes it easier for cats, raccoons and other threats to get to their home.  Mount your bird house on a pole if possible.

Leave about 100 yards between bluebird boxes.  Blue birds like a lot of room.

Don’t use more than one box per tree, unless your tree is super big.

One rule of thumb is no more than four small nest boxes per species, per acre.

If you live in a hot climate, position the house so the entrance hole faces North or East.

If you’re building your own bird house you can get as creative as you want, not only with the design but with the trim and paint.  This gives you the option to really personalize your new addition to your garden.

I like the idea of spending quality time with my children while birdwatching. I appreciate the tip to make sure that the birdhouse had thick insulated walls to keep the birds warm. I will also look into the best placement for my birdhouse to make sure that it attracts birds to it. I am excited to start watching birds with my kids and to have that special time together.
