When you have a small yard, you might feel disheartened about landscaping it. “How can I have a beautiful yard with such little space?” you might ask. But as you can see in the video below, there is no yard too small to be beautified into a wonderful space to enjoy.
One principle for landscaping in a small area is use your space efficiently. The landowners in the video began with a yard that was not fully utilizing the space. To visualize your yard as different from how it is now may take some imagination, but challenge yourself to think: how could I use space more efficiently?
Another question that plays into efficiency is: what do you need from your yard? Though in a perfect world you could have everything you want in a yard, the reality of the urban yard is that you may have to settle for only what you need. What are the essential aspects of a yard for you? How is the one you have now fulfilling those? Where does it fall short? Compile a list and see what you can include in your new yard. Some ideas are: beautiful vegetation like trees, bushes, or flowers; a comfortable seating area; easily maintainable; among others.
Of course, another consideration is your budget for your new yard. Even in a small space, it can get expensive to revitalize a yard. Consider what plants and yard furniture is within your budget to maximize the items on your list and fully make use of the space.
Also consider how to use the fences effectively. Fences separate many, if not most, urban yards. The materials of the fence as well as the height and style greatly affect the feel of the yard. Thus, to get the maximum appeal, consider whether your current fence or another fence is best suited for the job. Also, you might use vines or other plants to make the fence look even more desirable.
As you revamp your yard, watch out for cables and pipes. More likely than not, your yard will have at least one, if not a few, so look up where those are if you don’t know, or dig carefully if you can’t find out. The last thing you want to deal with when redoing your lawn is a leaking septic pipe! Planning ahead can save you a lot of hassle in the future.
Though you may not use everything in your old yard, repurpose or save anything you can. This will save money and time in the long-run, and may add the beauty of plants to some other part of your house!
