Research has now found a link to ADD and ADHD in children who live parents who are involved in violent abuse or who have mental disorders such as depression or anxiety. While heredity is still believed to be a strong indicating factor, pediatricians are now saying that partner abuse and parental depression can have a lasting effect on a child dealing with either of these issues during their formative years. Research is currently unable to answer “why” these conditions can cause children to develop ADD or ADHD but realizes that this is a public issue and will need a lot of funds in order to develop effective programs.
If you’re worried your child may have ADD or ADHD please contact your pediatrician so they can evaluate your child or refer them to a mental health professional.
