If you’re looking to start a garden, knowing how to germinate seeds is one of the most difficult but cost-saving parts of gardening. A single tomato plant can cost as much as a packet of tomato seeds! Here are the steps you need to follow to successfully grow plants from seed:
- Decide whether you want to plant inside or outside – most flowers and edibles can go straight outside if it’s above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, but others need it warmer.
- Use indoor pots for those that need to be inside or to get a headstart.
- Sow carefully – put each seed deep into the starter soil so it gets a good start.
- Keep your seeds warm and moist.
- Give them plenty of light, preferably 15 hours of bright light each day.
- Snip extra pairs of leaves to maximize the minerals for each plant.
- Prepare to plant!
- Protect the new plants with a row cover.
