As we all know, lawns a very important to producing a good first impression of your home. For some of us, it can be very difficult to keep it maintained. And sometimes despite our best efforts, the lawn goes down the potter. If your lawn if full of yellow patches, weeds, and bare spots, it might be time to sit down and read this post on how to resurrect your lawn.
If your lawn’s far past 50% gone, it may be best to start afresh. The first thing you need to get started on bringing your lawn back from the dead is to have your soil tested. Without a solid foundation for your grass, it will be impossible for it to grow properly. Have this testing done by a local contractor, then order any recommended soil amendments and compost.
Next, you’ll need to cut up the sod of your yard. Use a sod cutter machine to do the task quickly. It’s recommended that you run it the longest length of your yard, as this will prevent you from having to turn the clunky machine more times than you need to. If you can’t reach some spots, use a hoe.
Third, you’ll have to get that old grass out of there. Chop the strips of sod into 1-2 foot sections with a spade, then put them in a wheelbarrow and wheel them to the compost pile. If there are any good sections, save them for planting in your yard later.
Now you’ll want to till the soil. Till the top 2-4 inches using a rotary tiller. You’ll need your soil to be nice and loose for it to become hospitable for your new grass.
Once your soil’s tilled, you need to give it some nutrients with compost. Put 3 inches of compost over your lawn by wheelbarrow.
You’re almost there! Just two things left: grading the soil and spreading the new seed. For grading, use a grading rake to spread the compost and amendments smooth over the lawn.
Once everything’s mixed in and smooth, plant your new grass! Use a spreader to spread the seed effectively.
Water your seeds thoroughly and daily until the seeds sprout. If all goes well, you’ll have a beautiful green lawn that all the neighbors will envy!
Though it may seem like a lot of work to completely redo your lawn, you’ll find that it’s all worth it once you have it before you. Why be embarrassed by your decrepit lawn when with a bit of initiative you could fix it right up? Follow these steps and you’ll have a green lawn in time for the summer and fall!
