Sadly, some people never get to choose their own bathtub. They move into a house, condo or apartment and the bathroom has been designed and furnished by someone else. Often times the decision is made to just live with what is there.
BUT the are those who are strong enough to break out of the mold and do what is necessary to create their own style in their own home! Here are eight fabulous freestanding vintage style tubs which will help to create the personal design that is all YOU.
Many who hear the words “vintage tub” immediately see this tub in their minds eye. I have personally bathed in the tub at my grandmother’s house waaaay back in the day as well as in my own home (before we sold the home and moved!) This tub is called a rolled rim clawfoot tub. A true vintage tub is made of molded cast iron, however, today these reproduction tubs are also made of acrylic.
Even if you never take a bath in this clawfoot slipper tub, you will love just sitting and looking at it. There is such allure and glamour in the slipper styling it is nearly impossible to resist. Studies have shown that hydrotherapy, or soaking in water, is extremely beneficial for the human body. What better way to treat your body right than in this tub. The head, neck and back support is incredible.
Double ended tubs are available in many different lengths. Imagine that this one is a stunning 72 inches long with plenty on room for two. A three inch rolled rim and clawfeet are the sure sign of vintage styling. The double ends creates the opportunity for the tub’s interior floor space to be the longest possible. Therefore, two can enjoy a bath together, one at each end of the tub. Of course, if you prefer to keep your bubble bath to yourself you may recline at either end of the tub.
A tub for two is what I see when I look at this tub. The two raised ends means this is a double slipper tub and again, the clawfeet is the absolute sign of true vintage style. If you want to share this type of clawfoot tub with another, be sure the tub is long and examine the interior floor space. Additionally, the width needs to be a minimum of 30 inches or everyone will be too crowded. The double slipper is so elegant that even when you bathe alone you will feel so special.
Freestanding tubs can be considered vintage just because they are freestanding. The horse water trough was one of the first bathtubs as it was simply moved inside and used as a tub. Freestanding is a term that means the tub can be placed anywhere in the room as long as there is a water supply to fill the tub and a drain to eliminate the waste water.
Many modern tubs are are drop-in styles which are only attractive on two sides, rather than the lovely view you get all the way around a vintage tub. The pedestal base on this tub eliminates the grand clawfeet but keeps the lovely styling of the original tub styles. Reproduction vintage style tubs are available in cast iron and acrylic.
If and when you get the opportunity to design your own bathroom, don’t settle for common. Do something extraordinary, design around a vintage style tub!
