Keeping your home cool during the summer can be an expensive ordeal. Running the air conditioning full blast uses up a lot of electricity, bad both for your wallet and the environment. Fortunately, there are some ways you can keep the house cool that won’t use so much energy.
Tip #1: Shade Your Home (Especially the Windows)
- You can accomplish this either through overhangs you install yourself or using natural shade from trees. If you don’t already have trees, consider planting some – they can save a lot of energy over time as well as improve your lawn’s look.
Tip #2: Install Drapes, Blinds, or Shades
- This follows the same idea as the one above: keep the sun’s energy out of your home by shading the windows, but this time from the inside.
Tip #3: Maintain Air Circulation
- You can do this either with fans (both overhead and floor) as well as opening up the windows at night if it’s cool outside.
Tip #4: Turn Off Major Appliances Through the Day
- Major appliances you should avoid running to not produce extra heat during the day are the oven, the dryer, and the dishwasher.
Good luck staying cool! For more tips, check out the link and slideshow below.
